Presidential Trivia - First Ladies

Our 15th President, James Buchanan, was the only President to never marry. His niece, Harriet Lane (Johnston) served as the White House Hostess. She bequeathed her sizable art collection to the Smithsonian.

Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams (wife of 6th President John Q. Adams) is the only First Lady to have been born outside of the U.S.

Helen "Nellie" Herron Taft (wife of 27th President William Howard Taft) planted the first of DC's cherry trees.

Lou Henry Hoover (wife of 31st President Herbert Clark Hoover) is the only First Lady to earn a geology degree from Stanford University and played a significant role in establishing the Girl Scout movement.

Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Taylor Johnson (wife of 36th President Lyndon Baines Johnson) was given her nickname as a child. She raised national awareness of the environment as First Lady and continues to support the National Wildflower Research Center, which she founded in 1982. She also graduated in the top 10% of her class at the University of Texas.
